  • RPI ASME was established in 1880 as a professional society for mechanical engineers. The club has recently focused mostly on facilitating the presentation of career development opportunities to its members. Comprised of students from all majors and schools, ASME has been working to expand its presence on campus to more than just mechanical engineering majors. In 2014, ASME established a Punkin Chunkin’ competition on campus open to all RPI students. This year they are competing in a national student robotics competition.

RPI ASME is dedicated to bringing different engineering projects to its members, and with a membership base extremely interested in robotics, the club is working to design and build an entry for the national ASME Student Design Competition. The challenge for this year is to create an all-terrain robot that can deliver cargo from one end of a course to the other that includes water, sand, and stairs. Giving to ASME will immediately improve ongoing lab activities. ASME robotics teams will be able to expand work hours and have access to more tools as they prepare for the regional competition. A fully stocked lab will allow the ASME student section to provide a supervised work area for smaller groups not associated with ASME that are also struggling to find resources. With better facilities, the ASME student section will work on providing additional engineering activities and opportunities to the RPI community.

A donation supports creative Rensselaer students looking to extend their education beyond the classroom by providing tools and equipment for them to use when class machine shops are closed. The ASME student section supports projects of students from various majors, and the completed lab will aid established multidisciplinary programs like ASME Robotics and Punkin Chunkin’. Stocking this lab will also increase new programs and projects the ASME student section can offer to students. ASME will stock the lab with smaller tools, like allen keys, vice grips, and hand drills that are more frequently used, allowing for work on projects on weekends when labs are closed.

Having a lab with extended hours allowing for work on the weekends and evenings would enable ASME to construct more, higher-quality robots to represent Rensselaer. This lab would also allow for other clubs and small groups to access the space and benefit from the available materials.
