VW Golf Rear Bearing and Brake DIY

Here’s how to change the rear brakes and wheel bearing on a MK3 Volkswagen Golf or Jetta. This is a 1998 Golf VR6 but the procedure applies to all models with rear discs. The bearings are similar on the drum brake models too as well as the MK2 Golf and Scirocco.

These brakes differ to your average car with wheel bearings integral to the brake disc, ABS tone rings that need swapping out and calipers that need winding back properly.

This procedure requires no special tools BUT is made easier if you have them. A caliper wind back tool speeds things up as does a bearing packer. Here’s how you can do it without them.

The video also shows you how to adjust the bearings as per the Bentley manual.

A straightforward DIY that only requires basic tools including:

Wrenches:
11mm
13mm
15mm

8mm Hex
Pliers
Brake bleeding equipment (optional)

Socket set
Hammer
Screwdriver

Consumables:
Brake clean
Bearing grease
Copper grease

Remember to use eye protection.
