Love & Friendship is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan in which a beautiful younger widow Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) visits her in-laws’ estate when waiting for social chatter about her personal indiscretions to go. Though there, the intelligent, flirtatious, and amusingly egotistical Lady Vernon decides to secure a partner for herself and her somewhat unwilling daughter, Frederica. Enlisting the support of her aged mate Alicia (Chloë Sevigny), Lady Vernon appeals to the simultaneous interest of the younger, handsome Reginald DeCourcy, the wealthy and foolish Sir James Martin and the divinely handsome, but married, Lord Manwaring, complicating issues seriously.
