Toilet Seat Replacement
Diagnostic
Sometime a toilet seat may become loose, cracked or unsightly. Fortunately the toilet seat can be easily removed and replaced.
Parts
To replace the toilet seat a new seat needs to be purchased at a hardware or plumbing supply store. The toilet seat should come with the mounting bolt necessary for the instillation. Remember to purchase a seat that fits the shape of the toilet’s bowl.
Tools
The tools needed are a medium to large flathead screwdriver, a pair of Rib Joint Pliers, and in some cases a mini hacksaw.
Removal
Begin by inserting the head of the screwdriver under the top of the screw cap to pop up the cover and expose the screw. Now take the screwdriver and unscrew the large plastic screw affixing the seat to the toilet while holding the nut exposed on the bottom side. Once the nut is removed on both sides, the toilet seat should be free. If a seat bolt has become corroded then a mini hacksaw can be used to cut the bolt. Take a mini hacksaw and saw through the screw between the seat hinge and the porcelain bowl of the toilet. The mounting screws are often made of plastic, which greatly reduces the difficulty in this method.
To install a new toilet seat first place the rubber seals over the toilet seat mounting holes. Next place the toilet seat over the mounting holes and insert the metal washers and mounting bolts into the holes. Screw from the underside of the toilet the mounting bolt’s lock nuts. Make sure that they are tight enough to hold the toilet seat securely in place. A screwdriver can aid in the tightening process. Ensure that the seat is securely mounted. Close the mounting caps over the mounting bolts for a finished look and the seat is now installed and ready to use.
