Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench for 2004-1995 Chrysler, Dodge & Plymouth

This $4.95 wrench (if you get free shipping on Amazon. It costs $8.95 on eBay. I net the same from both sites.) is made of hardened steel and is unconditionally guaranteed. It fits the fuel pump lock ring for 61 vehicles (Chrysler, Dodge & Plymouth, 2004 – 1995). Search eBay for “Fuel Pump Lock Ring Wrench”.

The slim profile of this wrench allows you to change the fuel pump without removing the fuel tank from the vehicle (it pivots down just enough to extract the pump). This saves a lot of time and expense.

The lock ring and fuel tank on these vehicles are plastic. Since the lock ring has usually never been off before, it’s always stuck. Using a strap wrench (or other improvised tool) can break the plastic (not good!).

Removal of your fuel pump (and filter while you’re there) is easy if you have the following tools;

•Jacks and stands (raise the vehicle about 5″ to make access easier – I used some 2×12′s under the wheels – see picture at eBay – no need to raise driver side – I was doing other work over there),

•Compressed air (blow off the dirt before you open things up – squirting a garden hose will work if you don’t have compressed air),

•Socket set and this fuel pump lock ring wrench (which uses your 3/8″ ratchet),

•Needle nose pliers (to release the fuel line clips),

•Some scrap lumber to support the fuel tank with your jacks (see picture above – you need to slowly lower it to remove the pump – use wood to protect it since the tank is plastic!).

Tip; buy your fuel pump online (eBay or Amazon’s price is less than half what your local auto part stores charge – same with the fuel filter).

Why pay someone almost a $1000 to replace your fuel pump when you can safely and easily do it yourself for under $70 (including this wrench)? Here is how I did it in about an hour (your vehicle may require different steps);

1.Spray some penetrating oil on the two strap bolts (day prior).

2.Jack up van and support wheels in raised position (safety first).

3.Disconnect battery.

4.Remove fuel filler cap.

5.Release pressure in fuel line (its just like an air valve on a tire, but its gas, so use a paper towel and proper fire precautions). If your engine has been off for awhile, there should only be a few drops. Mine was located on top of the engine.

6.Clean tank area with compressed air.

7.Loosen lock ring while tank is securely held by straps. The lock ring is plastic, so be gentle. The key is putting the right force at the right places, which this wrench does for you.

8.Place wooden support and 2 jacks under fuel tank. Raise to within 1/4″ below straps.

9.Loosen each strap bolt a few turns. Tank should lower on to the wooden support. Remove bolts, then lower tank another inch. This should be enough to get the pump out.

10.Disconnect the electrical connector from the pump.

11.Disconnect the two fuel lines from the pump. Mine were different sizes. Mark yours if not.

12.Remove lock ring.

13.Remove fuel pump and O-ring.

14.Install new O-ring and pump.

15.Reverse prior steps and you’re done.
