Having a means to purify water in a survival situation will help keep you hydrated, your brain functioning properly and your focus on survival. We simply cannot survive without water. Your survival kit should contain water purification tablets or a personal water filter bottle that removes impurities, bacteria, viruses, chemicals, metals and odor.
2. Compass
It is essential to know which direction you are headed and where you need to be. Make sure you include a compass in your survival kit and know how to use it.
3. Fire Starter
You must have a way to start a fire to stay warm or cook your food. Include a lighter, matches, or a flint bar in your kit.
4. First Aid Kit
You do not want to be in a disaster or survival situation without a first aid kit. It is also a good idea for everyone to know basic first aid. Check within your local community to find out where you can take a basic first aid class. In most communities local fire departments will offer these classes.

Paracord can be used to create a makeshift shelter which is crucial for protection from the elements. It can be used to build snares and traps. The inner strands of the paracord can be used to make traps for catching small game. You can create a fishing line or gill net to catch fish. You can also use paracord to make a tourniquet, secure a splint, and make a sling for your arm.
