Hi my name is Jeffrey Knight with Ewing Irrigation and in this video I will
show you how to remove a broken riser using a stub wrench.

Okay, so unfortunately this is an all-too-familiar sight…this rotary head has blown off and we cant just thread it back on because the threads have broken off inside the fitting.

To make matters worse, when it was excavated, a lot of dirt got inside so
what we’re gonna do is we’re going to remove the broken riser with the stub wrench.

I will use another riser to help flush it out but I’m not gonna go back with this riser when I repair it, I’m going to use a swing joint because a swing joint allows for more mobility and it wont allow this to happen in the future.

So now I’m just gonna thread this riser into the fitting so that I can turn the
system on and push out all the dirt and debris out of the pipe.

Okay so now the system is flushed clean but now I’ve gotta hole full of water.
So what I’m going to do is use this dry matt and its gonna soak up all the water
and I’ll just move it to another location and get rid of it.

Okay so now that the waters out the hole I’m gonna get rid of the cutoff riser
and I’m gonna go back with the swing joint. Now the great thing about a swing
joint is that it allows for more mobility so if the head does get stepped on or run over with the lawn mower it’s just gonna mash down it’s not going to break the thread off into the fitting which is what a cut-off of riser is notorious for doing.

Okay, so you can see why a swing joint is so great. I can move the head up and down there’s more mobility.

I am going to have to dig back a little bit so I can get the head in place a little better but that is why a swing join is far superior to a cut-off riser.

So you can see a simple repair was made even easier with the stub wrench that you can pick up at your local Ewing branch.
