Strings should not be haphazardly installed in the piano without paying specific attention to wire twist–the plain wire should be bent around the hitchpin in such a way that both sides travel in the same plane as they transverse each of the piano’s contact points (e.g., bridge pins, capo, duplexes, etc.). A lack of attention to this detail will cause performance problems in the sound, tuning, and stability of the piano. It does not “cost” any more to do it right the first time around.

There is no reason to randomly and chaotically install strings in the piano, unless it is the installer’s intent to create random and chaotic sounding strings throughout the piano. Repeatable consistency is the key to quality piano workmanship.

    Advantages of this method:
    1. absence of string twist (i.e., a commonly cited source of string falseness and instability),
    2. no string levelling required–a process that is known to cause additional falseness in strings,
    3. tuning is more resonant and stable (i.e., the elimination of the uneven/unpredictable wire twists around/between the contact points allows the tuner to deal with the entire length of the string during the tuning process)

    Disadvantage of this method:
    1. the technician needs to have access to proper training/education and/or experience.

I suggest preparing strings ahead of time en masse–store them by size in something like the PVC pipe shown in the video [or small plastic tubes to carry a collection of sizes on-the-go].

The pliers: 3‑step wire looping pliers.
