Jammed Garbage Disposal: How to Clear a Jammed Disposal Quickly and Without a Plumber

Garbage disposals can sometimes be the best thing or the worst thing in the world. It’s always nice when a bit of food slips down the sink and you can just turn on something to grind it up and save your pipes. But there’s nothing worse than hearing a final ker-chunk of a jammed garbage disposal and remembering that terrible horror movie from last week.

Luckily, you don’t need to call a plumber or lose your hand when you have a jammed garbage disposal. 99% of the time (and that’s a conservative estimate), you just need the following to fix up that jammed disposal on your own:
¼” Allen wrench
needlenose pliers
flashlight

There are different procedures you can try if your garbage disposal just won’t turn on when you flip the switch.

One: Manually turn the motor and turn the power back on.

At the bottom of every disposal unit is a hole in the center that your Allen wrench can fit into. Stick (the short side of the L) in there, and manually turn the motor. If it turns without any terrible screeching sounds, your disposal solved the problem itself.

All you need to do now is fix the power, because it was tripped and the garbage disposal went into an automatic shut-off. Just push the red button – it will be close to the hole on the button – and you should be good to go. Turn on the faucet and test it out. If there’s still something wrong, chances are you have a blockage.

Two: Remove any blockages.

At this step, make sure the power is off. Also, under no circumstances should you stick your hand or anything you’re attached to in the disposal. Instead, take your flashlight and needle-nose pliers to bend the rubber flaps in. If there’s anything large, sharp, or hard in there, you need to take it out before it damages the disposal and, even worse, gets into pipes to cause even more damage.

Once you fish out (only with the pliers) whatever the blockage is, turn the water and the garbage disposal back on, and you should be back to grinding up food and nightmares.

However, as the video warns, garbage disposals aren’t trash cans and you should really be disposing of garbage in them. They’re just there in your sink in the off chance you do drop little bits of leftovers and aren’t in the mood to massively renovate your kitchen plumbing.
