  • Changing Savage rifle barrels is an easy job to perform with a few tools. Instead of basing headspace (the measurement from the bolt face to the chamber’s shoulder) on a fixed surface in the action, modern Savage and Stevens barrels are headspaced using a locking collar – essentially a threaded nut that locks the barrel in place. This system makes barrel swaps and caliber conversions a matter of minutes.

    Required Tools:
    1. Action Vise or Barrel Vise
    2. Profile-Specific Vise Bushings or Collars
    3. Savage Barrel Nut Wrench
    4. Wrench (Box-End Preferred)
    5. Hammer or Mallet (Rubber Preferred)
    6. Cartridge-Specific GO and NOGO Gages

CAUTION! – Be very careful when performing these operations. Incorrect headspace, barrel obstructions, or a loose barrel nut may lead to catastrophic damage of your rifle and any nearby body parts. Be sure to use proper tools. Torque the barrel nut to the factory specifications. The barrel nut wrench features 1/2-inch adapters for using a torque wrench.
