Bottom line up front… Leatherman Wingman, excellent daily carry tool, affordable and compact. Leatherman Surge, also an excellent daily carry, but bulkier and more expensive. Leatherman Crunch, not going to be a one-tool solution for anybody, but for those need a second tool to get the job done, it can’t be beat. Gerber 600, I don’t recommend to anybody.
The Wingman is a low price, compact, quality tool, narrowed down to the basic tools you really actually use. No corkscrew here… Just a knife, pliers, screwdrivers, and even some scissors (though the scissors are pretty bad, they wore out quick and became pretty much useless)
The Surge is much larger, heavier duty, more tool selection, but… it’s also twice the price, and the extra weight is noticeable if carried in the pocket.
The Crunch is totally unique, in that it actually has locking pliers, Vise Grip style. They’re not really “simple” like the regular pliers on the other models, but if you need to really clamp down on something, there isn’t anything out there that does that. The extra steps involved in opening those pliers however, keep me from recommending it to anyone planning to only carry one tool with them.
The Gerber… I don’t like it all. The pliers are clunky, the knife blades are small and awkwardly placed… really the only thing it has going for it is that the pliers can be opened quickly with one hand. All its other negatives however, really keep me from even carrying it all.
