This video is great for those who wonder how a typical low-end pump style air rifle works. It also includes instructions how to disassemble the Powermaster 66 and make some basic modifications.

Update:
By far, the best mod you could ever do with this air rifle is to fix the trigger mechanism. The stock configuration is way too hard to pull and has a rough feel.

Scrub the video to 3:10 minutes. You will see the trigger, the hammer release lever and a heavy spring. If you remove these 3 items and pull the two steel pins out, there is a metal arm and trigger return spring underneath the trigger. Both these springs can be adjusted for improved performance.

Starting with the trigger return spring, I’ve taken a common pliers and bent the leg of the spring to reduce the return pressure on the trigger to minimum. You have to make an adjustment, then reassemble the trigger and pin to test your adjustment and make sure the trigger returns reliably. If the spring is bent too much the trigger won’t return properly and the bolt will remain locked.

Next adjustment was on the hammer release lever. I identified the flat part which holds the hammer in place. It’s where the release lever actually touches the hammer. The video shows how this surface slides off the hammer to release it. This is originally very rough. I’ve taken a few swipes of #220, then #360 and then #400 sandpaper against this surface to smooth it out. I put a bit of teflon grease on the newly made surface and a bit on the contact portion of the hammer.

I also adjusted the heavy return spring the same way as the trigger spring. This is the spring shown at 3:10 in the video. It must be adjusted to so the catch will reliably latch and hold the hammer, but not excessively so. Finally, I put a small amount of teflon grease where the trigger pushes on the latch.

Oh, man what a sweet trigger it turned out to be! This, along with the pressure cylinder modification makes the rifle a lot more accurate with a bit more power.

Important note:
I’ve seen some videos which say the PowerMaster 66 is good for pest control and small game hunting. Please, I kindly ask anyone NOT to shoot animals with this rifle. This rifle is not designed for hunting. It is much better suited for plinking cans and targets. I have coffee tin on the end of a pole @ 35 yards which is a lot of fun to ring!
