Bit by bit annoying little things on the 1996 GMC Turbo Diesel Suburban are being addressed. Parts that really should have been serviced properly or replaced on the truck before I took it over were not addressed properly. In this little chapter, focus has been turned to getting the parking/emergency brake to work properly. It was doing so-so with old cables, but they were replaced, friends at a garage using heat to free up the adjusting bolt on the mechanism under the truck so that one of the old cables (going to the right side) could be unscrewed and the new cable fitted, in conjunction with the left cable, could be undertaken. Trouble was, while the rear brakes had a lot of components replaced, there was not really any lubrication at shoe to backing plate points or the emergency brake lever mechanisms. Results were a sticking right rear brake which led to a little heat. All appears to have been corrected with today’s exercise. The brake drums are about 16-inches total diameter, take a 13-inch lining, 2.5 inches wide and weigh a good 50 pounds each. With certain combinations of parts a 4-inch wide shoe can be used. This would be for really heavy loads or towing. They more then meet my requirements as is right now, there is a lot of meat as is! The brakes work very well, and even just using the emergency brake in a test, the truck slows down very well in a quick manner just to give an idea of the strengths of these brakes are. To note, there is a lot of parts common usage between the three major domestic truck manufacturers with the large 13-inch rear brake setups from what I understand.
