https://honda-tech.com/how-tos is the leading Honda Accord and Civic resource for technical DIY guides. Your car’s power steering system is a complicated one. It involves a hydraulic system and lines to pump it with proper power steering fluid. For the full step-by-step article, please visit https://www.honda-tech.com/how-tos/a/honda-accord-why-is-my-power-steering-reservoir-leaking-foam-376515
When this system requires repairs or fails, there are a few signs to indicate something might be wrong. Typically, a leak will be seen under the car near the front left wheel. Other signs may include a groaning sound when turning. Another sign will be around the power steering reservoir where you may also notice foaming. Two parts of the system are the typical culprits: the filter within the reservoir, or the front input shaft seal.
The time to get your power steering system back in shape will take one to two hours. It will cost you around forty-four dollars to do. This task ranges from easy to moderate depending on how far you will far to troubleshoot the system.
The supplies you’ll need for this job are: vice grips or pliers, a catch pan, flathead screwdriver, turkey baster, new power steering hose, new power steering reservoir, new input shaft O ring and adjustable wrenches.
Step 1 – Replace Power Reservoir and Hose
-With a turkey baster, drain as much fluid as you can from the power steering reservoir.
-With the pliers or vice grips, squeeze this clamp together and pull the hose off.
-Then do the same to the other side of the hose connected to the power steering.
-Remove this hose connected to the other side of the power steering reservoir.
-Finally, push this clip back so you can pull the reservoir up and out of the engine bay.
-Install the new hose and reservoir in the reverse order of removal.
-Refill the reservoir with new fluid if the drained fluid was dirty.
Step 2 – Replace Power Steering Pump O-Ring
Another common area for the leak is the front input shaft seal on the power steering pump.
-Place a towel under the inlet joint bolt.
-Use the adjustable wrench to remove the bolt from the inlet joint.
-Separate the coupler from the hose.
-Remove the O-ring from the inlet hole.
-Put the new O-ring into the inlet hose coupler.
-Reinstall the inlet joint bolt.
-Check the fluid level again in the power steering reservoir.
That’s all there is to troubleshooting and eliminating all that noise coming from your Honda power steering system.
