One year ago, I found this old cleaver in the shop. It belonged to my great grand-mother, who gave it to my grand-mother, who gave it to my mother. Too rusty to be used, it ended up in the garage. So, I decided it was time for a little restoration.
I ground it with my 2×72″ belt grinder with 40, 60, 120, 240 and 400 grid belts and polished it with the buffing wheel to get a mirror finish.
But at the end of the build, I changed my mind and decided to try and make a faux Hamon pattern before sharpening it.
In the video, you will see me using a file to check the hardness of the blade. I made sure to not overheat it while I was grinding, not to ruin the temper.
For the handle, as the old one was round, I turned a piece of wood a friend gave me when I was in Japan (not sure what it is).
