This is Part 3 in my series on replacing the Brake lines on Katrina, my 2001 Saturn SC2. In this part you’ll see me clean up the fittings for re-use, including my technique of using a torch to heat up the stuck fittings while hitting it with a wrench to brake them loose.
I’m using nickle-copper brake lines for this job. You’ll see me cut it and bend it into shape. You also get to see how a flare tool flares the ends of the the brake lines.
There’s some awkward shots of me crawling all over the engine and under the car, which are mostly there to demonstrate the awkwardness of this kind of job should anyone try it on their own.
Some of the specialty tools shown are: a small tubing cutter, tube bending pliers, and a flare tool kit which includes a clamp specially designed to hold several different sizes of tube and the flaring tool itself which fits over the clamp and allows the user to crank a steel cone down into the end of the tube, forcing the tube to stretch and flare outward.
