https://carvingonwood.com/powerrelief101 Carbide burrs are the perfect burr for removing lots of material quickly. There are many different sizes and types of carbide burrs. Some of them are more aggressive than others, but all will do the job of removing material.

Carbide burrs are great when they are working correctly. This can only happen if the burrs are kept clean. During the power carving process the teeth or flutes of the carbide build up material. Depending on the type of carbide you are using this material can be anything from stringy fibers of wood to wood char and burt material.

There are different ways to clean carbide burrs when they get clogged. Each way works well for the type and size of the burr you are using. When power relief carving with a high-speed engraver you will clean the burr differently than when you are power carving a large duck or fish.

A high-speed hand piece is very useful for adding detail and for getting into those tight spots where other power carving hand pieces can’t.

To clean the carbide burrs used in a high-speed engraver you will want to be careful that you do not damage the burr shaft or the hand piece itself. To do this follow these steps:

Remove the carbide burr from the high-speed engraver.
Take a pair of pliers or vice grips and apply hot glue to both jaws.
The hot glue will create a smooth but grippe pad to hold the burr during cleaning.
Place the shaft of the burr into the pliers and grip firmly.
Using a steel toothbrush sized brush wipe the char and debris out of the flutes of the carbide burr.
Go in different directions to ensure you get it clean.
Once clean reinsert the burr into the hand piece and continue carving.

A high-speed engraver uses friction to hold the burr in place during carving. If the shaft of the burr gets damaged it can cause damage to the hand piece and turbine. Removing the burr and using a hot glue coated pair of pliers will help prevent damage to the shaft of the burr.
