Shown here are informational directions for the removal of the parking brake (also called an emergency brake) assembly and the front parking brake cable on a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan. (For installation, do this in reverse.) In order to remove the assembly, the steering column cover and the reinforcement underneath it must be removed. The electrical junction block was also removed for access to the assembly. The left front kick panel is also removed to take up the carpet to get at the seal as the cable goes from inside to outside the floor. The assembly is held by 3 bolts, the middle of which can been seen and accessed only by pushing the parking brake pedal down to the floor. Otherwise it is sitting behind a metal piece attached to the pedal’s lever arm.
To remove the cable, unhook the end of the cable underneath the car which is attached to the other 2 cables via the brake equalizer. To do this, pull the equalizer toward the back wheels and put a locking vice grip tightly on the front cable near a flap on the car so that the front cable cannot move. This will provide the slack on the back cables so that you can move the brake equalizer around. Orient the equalizer so that you can maneuver it and get the front cable out of the equalizer. Not shown in the video is that the cable is also connected to the bottom of the car with a “retainer” that has been put through a hole and is held in by clips. Use a 1/2# box end (open ended) wrench, or pliers, or whatever will work to push in the clips so that the retainer can fit through the hole and be pushed toward the front of the car. From there, go inside the car, under the carpet, and pull out the rubber seal in the hole in the floor. The cable can now be pulled through this hole. The other end of the cable is attached to the brake pedal assembly by it’s end being fitted in a notch of the assembly’s pulley. The notch might be bent to keep the cable from coming out, so you might have to bend a small piece of metal straight to get the end of the cable out of the assembly’s notch.
