  • How to do-it-yourself on renewing an antenna’s coaxial (shielded) cable connection.
Transcript provided for the hearing impaired:
Alright so today on Repairs101 I’ve got a frayed piece of coaxial cable on a two-way radio antenna that needs repairing.
OK so here’s the deal: coax is used on electronics like two-way radios, radar and something called television.
Now here’s a sample I put together, really the tip should be soldered as well as the shield should be soldered to the fitting.
This is what a bad installation looks like. I guess he was in a hurry or something, I don’t know. So I cleaned it up and I dismantled it. I had a heck of a time getting this plug out. (There it goes!)
Obviously the wire needed to be fresh-ended. So I marked the wire for the core and the shield — just the same as the old wire. Once the end is prepped you want to slip on a shrink tube.
Next I took a terminal and I bent the ring back and then I spread apart the saddle a little bit. I put it all together and spread the shield away from the dielectric. Be sure your dielectric is cut so that it’s flush to avoid any signal leakage.
I trimmed the ring off, then I gave the saddle a real good squeeze. Then a little solder here, a little solder there. A little solder there, too. So then shrink tube, two layers thick. And then last but not least was this little plug that I stuck on with some silicone.
Finish up with a continuity test from the antenna to the core and again from the fitting to the base.
Alright, thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe!

Hi! Welcome to The Half-Naked Handyman. Today we are talking about shop safety. Number one thing loose clothing. You don’t want excessively loose clothing. It can get caught in tools. It can get caught in machines, It can catch on things you are working on and potentially pull you into it or it onto you. You also have to worry about it dipping into things such as paint, or oil, or gasoline, or whatever you are working with. Say you are working with paint and you bend over to dip your paint brush and it dips into the paint. Then you have paint on your clothes, then you have paint on the floor, then maybe you have paint on you. Maybe you got paint on the dog or maybe you got paint on your lover. You don’t know. And unless its finger paint I’m guessing you probably don’t want it all over the house.
Next we are going to talk about eye protection. Eye protection is very important in the shop. especially from things popping up and squirting or splashing you in the face. Now also with eye protection you want to be wearing it while doing other things such as cutting and doing other things such as hammering because you can get saw dust, or wood chips, or metal splinters in your eyes which can cause severe or permanent damage. Alright with ear protection, you always want to wear ear plugs or ear muffs. I mean say you are working in the shop and you are working around some heavy machinery. The heavy machinery usually puts out higher decibels like your lover when they are yelling at you. You usually want to cover something up, you don’t know. So protect your ears, not only for your benefit but for theirs as well. Now we are going to tell you about work gloves. They protect your hands from nicks, cuts, scratches, splinters depending on what you are working with. Wearing gloves can be important in the shop, but knowing when to wear gloves can be just as important. When working with machinery, it can be a great idea not to wear gloves as these can catch and bind in a machine just like excessively lose clothing. These differ from rubber gloves which keep your hands clean from paints or other things. Now we don’t have any rubbers here so I can’t show you any of those. So knowing the time when its appropriate and not appropriate to wear gloves is a great idea to protect your hands but also to protect you. Alright, last but not least. You always want to remove any jewelry or anything you have around your wrists or on your hands to avoid being caught or bound up in a machine. This can be very hazardous not only to your jewelry but also to your hands and fingers.
