Hey guys, welcome back to KnifeHog.com! Addison here and today I’ll be reviewing the Schrade Old Timer Bearhead Trapper model 96OT.
During a camping or hunting trip, it’s nice to know that, in addition to your heavy-duty cutting gear, you’ve also got a lightweight, easily accessible EDC knife; this is where the Schrade Old Timer Bearhead Trapper shines! With an overall length of 7.6” and two blades measuring 3 ½”, the Bearhead Trapper is the ideal pocket knife. Both of the trapper’s blades are constructed of 7Cr17Mov steel, which is a Chinese made steel comparable to 440A. 7Cr17 is a fairly inexpensive metal that is ideal for performing small cutting chores but that’s about it. Both blades are only good for cutting things like thin twine or plastic and, due to the steel’s low edge retention properties, will require a lot of sharpening. The handle of this knife is composed of a synthetic polymer material known as Delrin and has been fitted with a brass frame to provide you with a durable and sturdy grip. The handle of this knife holds a pair of tweezers and a metal pick.
Overall, the Old Timer Bearhead Trapper is an effective pocket knife. Its compact size, sturdy handle and extra tools makes this a very useful pocket knife to take camping, hunting or hiking but is not well suited for anything else. The two blades fitted on this knife are constructed of a low quality blade steel that are only able to handle very light cutting tasks and require quite a bit of sharpening. Also, there is not much texture on the handle, which could be a problem when handling this knife in the rain or snow. Also, the tweezers and metal pick fitted in the handle are extremely difficult to deploy and, at times, require pliers to be opened.
