My 2016 S1000RR with only 2000km created a small oil leak from the output shaft seal. The bike is still under warranty from BMW Motorrad Canada, but I decided to pay for the part ($40cdn) and change the seals myself. I don’t have the time to get my trailer, and deliver the bike to the dealer, and pick it up the next day.
The output shaft seal part comes with three items. Outer dust seal, inner metal sleeve, and a “o ring” rubber seal. The oil leak is most likely caused from the “o ring” seal not in proper position, or ripped.
I removed the outer dust seal by using a sharp punch and hammered a small hole into the dust seal. I then used a wood screw to screw into the hole to create a grab handle. Using locking pliers, I was able to pull it out with one large yank.
With the dust seal removed, I noticed the inner sleeve was also stuck, but after a few hand turns, it came free. The “o ring” seal behind it was still in tact, so it must have been leaking due to a miss-install by the factory. The “o ring” can get squished, or not seat properly with the metal sleeve.
I don’t have a BMW manual (not sure anyone does), so I had to figure out the best method to reinstall the new rubber gasket, sleeve, and outer dust seal.
