Learn how to set and use a snap trap to catch mice. This is an easy, low cost, off the shelf solution to a mouse problem. In order to get rid of mouse problem, all that you have to do is bait and set the traps, and then check them about once per day.

The video also demonstrates how to deal with the occasional problem related to snap traps, such as when the trap doesn’t instantly kill the mouse, or when trigger sensitivity needs to be altered. Generally, these traps work by quickly suffocating the mouse, breaking its neck, or crushing the skull. Once in a while, the mouse gets caught by the leg or nose or somewhere else, and won’t die quickly. If this occurs, the rodent should be quickly and humanely clubbed and disposed off.

Snap traps are great because they can save the cost of an exterminator. They easy to use and fit into tight places. All you have to do is set a trap line by setting a couple of traps in likely places, and then check them once a day. Just keep on killing the mice. This reduces the mouse population and keeps them from breeding, controlling the numbers and minimizing the problem. If a mouse gets into the house, it will eventually get caught. Some exterminators use the snap trap technique. However, be sure to keep set snap traps out of the reach of pets and little children.

I like to tether my traps, particularly if they are located somewhere where the mouse can drag the trap into an inaccessible area, where it will then eventually die, and cause a stink. For example, if the trap is set in an air duct and the mouse is caught by the leg and drags the trap down the duct before it dies, it will be difficult to recover the trap and dead mouse. The dead mouse will start to stink. However, if the trap is tethered, the mouse can only drag the trap to the end of the string, making it easy to recover and dispose of both mouse and trap.

I like snap traps better than mouse poison, because a snap trapped mice won’t die in the walls and stink. Additionally, there’s no risk of pets getting poisoned. The snap trap has many advantages.

My favorite mousetrap is the victor brand, because it works. There are lots of snap traps on the market which don’t work, however I know from experience that this brand works well. There may be other good brands as well. I like the old style of victor trap with the metal trigger; it’s a classic and seems to work really well.

    Bait:

The purpose of bait is to get the mouse into the trap. Watch what the mouse likes to eat, and use that food as a bait. The mouse is used to eating a certain food, say it’s chewing on your bacon. Obviously, the mouse likes bacon, so remove the big piece of bacon the mouse destroyed and put a trap baited with bacon it it’s place. Now you know what the mouse is eating and where to locate your trap. My favorite bait is half a peanut without additional flavoring, such as candy coating or something else.

If the mouse is really smart, put little bits of bait in a location you think the mouse frequents. If the bait is gone every morning, the mouse is eating the bait. After a few days the mouse is conditioned to the bait. Now put down the baited trap, and catch the mouse.

    Where to set the trap:

Watch the mouse runs around. Watch for droppings. That’s where you set the trap. You want the mouse to find the baited trap, and get snapped. A flame can be used to remove human sent from a trap, although mice usually don’t care about human scent. Do this outside, somewhere where there is no risk of causing a fire. A quick touch of flame removes the scent. Hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean up mouse blood. Pour some onto the blood, let it sit for a while and then wipe it away.

Mice can cause a lot of problems. They can damage a house by wrecking the insulation. Mice can also eat and contaminate food supplies, spread diseases and even cause fires when they chew on electrical wires. In many cases, it’s not necessary to call an exterminator, just set some traps, and kill the mice yourself. It’s quick, simple and easy to do.
