In this video, “Beautiful Bead Locked Earrings,” I demonstrate the how to make these beautiful earrings in easy to follow, step by step instructions.
To create the earrings that you see me make in the video, I used 18 gauge nickel silver wire. You may also use .035 sterling silver wire, soft, round. This is an ideal gauge metal to work with, and easily conforms to bending and wire wrapping techniques, resulting in jewelry of enduring strength. You may experiment with the many wires available at craft stores. A wire that I recently discovered is Niobium, which is a hypo-allergenic metal, easy to work with, and available in many anodized colors.
The construction of the “Beautiful Bead Locked Earrings” requires the use of a variety of jewelry pliers including round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, curved nose pliers, side cutters and bail making pliers. I also employ a few different types of jewelry hammers to harden and shape the metal wire. Placing the formed earring on a steel block or anvil, a rawhide hammer is used to harden and flatten the earring. The rawhide will effectively remove unevenness from the wire earring without marking up the wire’s surface. The final step in forming the earrings is to flair out areas of the earring using a chasing hammer and a steel block.
One final note, the jewelry objects that you see created in my videos are original designs by me, Ross Barbera. These designs may be copied for your personal use only, but may not be offed for sale or exhibition without written permission from Ross Barbera.
