  • Learn how to quickly sharpen a spade or shovel using a belt sander.

Landscapers, tree nursery people, farmers and gardeners often sharpen their shovels in order to be more efficient. Think of a shovel or spade as a dirt knife. It cuts through the soil and through roots much better when sharp. This increases work efficiency, thereby saving time and money.

Use appropriate caution and safety equipment when sharpening a shovel using this technique. Don’t wear loose fitting clothing which can get caught in the sander. Also be careful with the shovel once it’s sharp. To increase safety, have someone hold the plug of the extension cord. This person can quickly disconnect the machine if a problem is encountered.

These sharpening techniques works for me. They may or may not be appropriate for your particular situation.

In the video, I use a 50 grit sandpaper sanding belt, which is really rough sandpaper. This removes metal fast, quickly sharpening the tool. I don’t bother going down to finer sandpaper grits because a shovel only has to be so sharp. If the shovel gets really dull, I will quickly re-sharpen it. This only takes a minute or two.

It is also possible to sharpen a shovel using an aluminum oxide grinding stone and a rotary tool, such as a Dremel brand tool. The oscillating tool sanding pad technique would also work, only stick with the really rough sandpaper. Have fun and stay safe!

Hi there this is a conversion of changing out a drill chuck from 3/8 to 1/2. There are various “drill chuck removal” videos on youtube so you can check those out how to remove one. I will say that I could not remove the retaining screw, tried to drill it out. Even then I had to use a cheater bar on the allen key to twist the chuck off. So I twisted it off with the retaining screw and it broke it off. Then the chuck easily came off and the left over bit of screw was easy to remove. For this drill the chuck comes off in the normal direction. Right tight , left loose. The screw is reverse thread and left was tight.

There was no way to lock the chuck to stop it from spinning. But then I noticed there was a spot for a wrench behind the chuck. But there was no way to slide a regular wrench into that spot. Maybe if you grind one of your wrenches. I took it apart just for the reason so I could lock the arbor down with vice grips. The 1st time I tried to turn the chuck off, the arbor turned in the vice grips chewing the arbor up. BUT the area where the grips are on are not a surface area touching anything.

The new 1/2″ chuck was $14 and did not come with a new screw. So if you need a new screw don’t forget to pick that up. I did see there was previous grease on the gear box of the drill so I applied some bearing grease and put it back together.

If you are trying to get a drill for a tubing notcher and your 3/8 chuck will not fit try this conversion.
