This video is a follow up to the video posted by Mike Pier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPdUuNm8hes. I was quoted a price for the sliding door motor of $779 and $60 for the center roller. Add labor and I could have been over $1200 for the repair. The price tag on the parts I got $7.83 at Home Depot.
A couple of challenging things with this repair.
1. Strip the end of the wires about 2 inches from the end. Use a pair of pliers to bend the wire and loop it back on itself through the hole. Pull the loop into the center of the copper set screw and you will have more material to cramp down on so it won’t pull out of the center pulley.
2. Grinding the copper and set screws can be a little challenging. I used a pair of narrow vice grips to hold the copper. Then use vice grips to hold the wire while you grind off the teeth marks from before. Once those are attached, push the wire from the outside through the holes and connect it to the pulley.
3. I found it easier to put the tension pulley together once I had the center roller attached and slid all the way to the fully opened position.
It can be done and Home Depot does have the parts as of May 2014.
God bless you,
John
