Cardboard boxes are often difficult to find, and can be expensive. Just take the stuff you want to move, and quickly put it into a reusable shopping bag, plastic storage container or bin, or into a big recycling bin.

The reusable shopping bags are very strong and have handles, making them great for carrying. They are made of strong material, similar to a tarp, which means they can handle relatively heavy weights. These bags are also puncture resistant. They are flexible, which allows them to be pushed into irregular spaces in the moving van, which wastes much less space. Reusable shopping bags are very inexpensive and are available from grocery stores. The best shopping bags are the Costco bags, which are about the size of a small box. I knot the carrying straps with a reef knot and then carry the bag to the van. Blue reusable IKEA shopping bags also work great and are quite inexpensive.

The plastic storage bins are also relatively inexpensive. They are tough, stackable, waterproof and easy to carry. Once you arrive at your house, the stuff can be left in the storage containers until it is convenient to unpack. These plastic storage bins can also be used after the move.

Recycling bins, the big ones, also work well. They are made of thick strong plastic, making them tough and easy to carry. They don`t have a lid, which means they aren`t stackable. However, if you fill the bottom of the van with blue bins, and then put a sheet of plywood on top of them, it is possible to stack another layer of blue recycling bins on top of the first layer.

Another technique is to just put stuff into heavy duty garbage bags. This looks visually unappealing but it also works well.

A moving truck is a great idea. If you don`t have a moving truck, a mini van with the seats taken out is also a really good moving vehicle. If possible, a vehicle can tow a uhaul trailer, which makes moving easier. A pick-up truck is also good for moving. For a small move, it is possible to use a hatchback car. Hatchbacks are usually better cars than sedans, because the seats can be fold down and bigger items can fit into the car, almost like a small minivan. Some hatchbacks have a surprising amount of cargo room. A sedan usually has less of an ability to carry bigger, bulkier items. If I have a choice between buying a sedan and a hatchback, I would try and select a hatchback, because this type of vehicle has a better cargo carrying capability.

The idea is to go through your house, and just quickly put stuff into these containers. This is speed packing. Then take some masking tape or green painters tape and label what`s in each box or bag. Then just get a bunch of friends to quickly help carry it out and put it into the moving van. The boxes can be stacked and the flexible bags fit in any irregular shaped holes, wasting little space.

What you`ve done is organize, label and containerize all the small stuff in your house. This is exactly what the transportation industry does. They have these big Sea Cans. These big aluminum containers are used for global trade, filled with many different goods. These Sea Cans are stacked on ships, and then loaded off of the ships and attached directly to railway cars or transport trucks. It`s totally organized, the little stuff is all packed in the big Sea Can containers, and the containers can be stacked on top of the other. It`s a highly efficient system. I have used these same principles to make your move easier, only I have substituted plastic containers and bags for a Sea Cans. Keep things organized, containerized and labeled. Keep it simple.
