Breaking down sheet goods – Whether you are in a large production shop or a small one stall garage breaking down sheet good material is always a chore. Larger facility typically have some pretty fancy floor panel saws but the smaller shop needs to find the space to break their sheet goods down. They can have the home center or lumber yard pre-cut them into smaller pieces or they can wrestle them in their shops. Once the material is in the shop, there are a variety of ways to cut the material down to rough or final size. A table saw is the best choice but sometimes dedicated space for the machine is tough to come by, let alone the in-feed and out-feed room needed for full sheet good material. A guide and a circular saw is a great way that is affordable and gives adequate results. The best method besides a table saw or panel saw is a track saw. They are a bit spendy but with other manufacturers getting into the game, the price is coming down fast. The concept behind a track saw is simple, it is a track that the saw (fancier circular saw) rides along. The blade cuts a sacrificial piece on the track to give you a perfect indication on where your cut will be. Mark your material and line up the track’s edge to the marks and make your cut! Very easy and most of the time gives you finish cut results that you can go right to assembly with. The problem with a small shop is they may need to make repeatable cuts on sheet good stock with their track saw and marking, lining up the track, and cutting gets old really quickly. Woodpeckers have come up with their Parallel Guide System for track saw tracks. It allows the user to set the dimension they would like and make as many cuts at that dimension as they want!
Parallel Guide System (PGS)
The PGS pairs Woodpeckers’ zero side-play Flip Stops and special three-slot T-track with a bracket exclusively designed for a rigid attachement to Festool’s Guide Track. This system gives the user the ability to set their dimension and easily and repeatably cut the same dimension over and over. The T-track segments allows cuts up to 52″ and also allows the user to make cuts under 10 1/2″ with the use of the Narrow Stock Guides and the side scales.
The PGS includes:
2 Main Body Brackets
4 Flip Stops
8 Laser engraved triple slot T-tracks
6 T-track connectors
2 Narrow Stock Ripping Guides
The entire unit is shipped in nice foam packing encased in a cardboard box. An optional Systainer case is available that is compatible with Festool’s Systainers. Perfect for keeping with your TS-55 or TS-75.
Our Impressions and conclusion
This unit is perfect for a small shop that needs to accurately and repeatably cut sheet good material down to size. We have a large 36″ SawStop table saw in our shop that has a sliding cross cut sled that makes quick work of cross cutting full 4′ wide sections of plywood but it is very tough and dangerous to wield a full 4′ x 8′ or even a 5′ x 5′ sheet of material on the saw. We typically use a clamping guide and a circular saw if the cuts are rough cuts (much faster), and if we need to make final finish cuts, we will use the Festool Track Saw system. Often times when we have a large project we need to cross cut multiple sheets. The PGS is a real treat to be able quickly set your dimensions and place the track in place and make your cut. An added benefit to the PGS is it helps keep the track in position adding two additional registration points and not solely relying on the grip tape on the bottom side of the track.
A large shop with a 52″ fence on their table saw may not be the right fit for this product as they have the equipment and space to handle full size sheet goods. This product solves a problem. Fast, repeatable, and accurate cuts with the track saw for the small to medium shop that needs the ability to work with sheet good material in a more efficient manner.
